AdminHistoryWilliam Fry and Sylvia Reed, husband and wife, first worked together in 1960 in A Strange Coming, which had been written by Sylvia to mark Epiphany and was produced by Peter Albery (Sylvia’s first husband). This production marked the beginning of what was to become Theatre Roundabout.

Their work has notably encompassed religious dramas such as The Pilgrim’s Progress, My Brother’s Keeper and Kingdom Come, plays in which they have sought to explore issues of faith, implicitly inviting their audiences to consider essential issues of humanity and personal responsibility.

Theatre Roundabout was also famed for its adaptations of classic works such as Vanity Fair, Jane Eyre, Lark Rise to Candleford and Barchester Towers. The work of creating the adapted scripts was undertaken by William and Sylvia, often working on amendments in their motor caravan whilst on the road. Alongside productions, William and Sylvia also sought to teach the basics of performing drama, especially religious drama through a range of workshops, publications and their involvement with Radius.

For over forty years, the repertoire of Theatre Roundabout depended on a unique working partnership both on and off stage. While their productions were mainly directed by others (with William taking on the duties for certain productions), Sylvia and William took on every other aspect of running the company as it famously toured across Britain in a succession of caravans; the last named Mercy .The performances drew on a chemistry that had been evident from their first appearance together in A Strange Coming.
