Thomas Keneally with 'Confederates', published by Collins,

Julian Rathbone with 'Joseph', published by Michael Joseph, and

The Judges were Lord (Asa) Briggs (Chair), Benny Green, Michael Ratcliffe, Hilary Spurling, and Paul Theroux.
