Barry Unsworth with 'Pascali's Island', published by Michael Joseph, and
J. L. Carr with 'A Month in the Country', published by Harvester.
The Judges were Professor David Daiches (Chair), Ronald Blythe, Margaret Forster, Claire Tomalin, and Brian Wenham.
