The shortlisted authors were:
Aravind Adiga with the winning novel 'The White Tiger', published by Atlantic Books,
Sebastian Barry with 'The Secret Scripture', published by Faber & Faber,
Amitav Ghosh with 'Sea of Poppies', published by John Murray,
Linda Grant with 'The Clothes on Their Backs', published by Virago,
Philip Hensher with 'The Northern Clemency', published by Fourth Estate, and
Steve Toltz with 'A Fraction of the Whole', published by Hamish Hamilton.
The Judges were Michael Portillo (Chair), Alex Clark, Louise Doughty, James Heneage, and Hardeep Singh Kohli.
The 2008 'Best of the Booker' was awarded to Salman Rushdie for his novel 'Midnight's Children' (1981 winner). The judges were Victoria Glendinning (Chair), Mariella Frostrup, and John Mullan.
