TitleCorrespondence A to Z
Admin/Biog HistoryLetters, postcards, printed invitations and greetings cards were sent to Sewell by a diverse group of individuals. These included friends, established and upcoming artists, key figures from museums and galleries, academics, fellow authors, and members of the public who had read his books and articles, or saw his television appearances. In some instances, artists also sent Sewell small, specially painted or drawn cards, and letters illustrated with images.
DescriptionThe files in this series contain correspondence relating to many different subjects and date throughout Sewell's adult life. Some of the material was created in the 1940s but the majority date from the 1980s onwards, when Sewell first began working as a critic. In this role, he regularly received and answered a huge amount of correspondence.

The correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by the surname of the correspondee or, if there are letters from Sewell without any related correspondence, by the name of the recipient of the letter. In addition, there is a small amount of correspondence to and from correspondees it has not been possible to fully identify. This can be found in the two files of unidentified correspondence at the end of the series.

Where possible, correspondence relating to specific articles written by Sewell has been filed alongside the relevant article in the series BS/1/5 - Articles.
