TitleGilbert Benthall's manuscripts and research notes
Admin/Biog HistoryBenthall was a collector of the pictures, drawings and engraved works of Mortimer. According to his Notebooks on art schools (which are housed at the Paul Mellon Centre: Ref GB) he began collecting works by Mortimer in the 1910s. Shortly afterwards he started to compile detailed research notes on the artist, and began to create - in a series of seven notebooks - a catalogue of engraved works and research notes entitled: Notes on the Life of J.H. Mortimer A.R.A.. Benthall continued this research until his death in 1961, by which tim he had created several very detailed volumes. Although these volumes were never published, they have formed the basis of all the subsequent research work on Mortimer.
DescriptionThis series includes the a set of draft manuscript volumes compiled by Gilbert Benthall concerning the life and work of Mortimer. It includes information about works by Mortimer, with a particular focus on prints, drawings and engravings. It also includes a selection of photographs of works by the artist.

All the volumes were compiled exclusively by Benthall, and the file titles given are those assigned by him.

Additional copies of many of these volumes were deposited at the V&A in June 1961, after Benthall's death. In most instances, the content of the volumes at the V&A and those at the Paul Mellon Centre is very similar: with those at the V&A having being compiled slightly later. Significant differences between the volumes in this series and the copies held by the V&A has been noted at file level.
